FY 2017 Annual Report October 2016 – September 2017

Between October 2016 and September 2017, the following key activities were performed;

o   A study tour- experience sharing- program was organized on Avocado Value Chain in Israel for 11 people gathered from the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources (MoANR) and other sectorial offices at federal and regional level.

o   Three workshops were undertaken in Addis Ababa and Hawassa to review project’s performance and revise the future plans of the projects on planting material supply and delivery as well as on provision of extension services.

The project has performed intensive capacity building;

o    A total of 31 training days and experience sharing forums were organized for smallholder farmers during the reporting period in Amhara, SNNPR, Tigray and Oromia regions. In general, about 717 (597 male and 120 female) smallholder farmers have been trained on improve orchard management.

o    Similarly, trainings were organized for 194 people in government (146 male and 48 female) gathered from various woredas, regional sector offices and nursery centers in four regions.

Report on Export of Avocado August, 2016

The Smallholder Horticulture Program (SHP) was a joint USAID-MASHAV-MoANR Ethiopia program implemented in six woredas, namely Mecha, Basona Worena, Guto Gida, Meskan, Boloso Sore and Raya Alamata woredas. The SHP was redesigned and extended for a year since May 2015, and provided support for nursery development, seedling supply, and extension service development to smallholder farmers, capacity building and other technical assistance. The SHP’s long-term aim was to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers through support the establishment of sustainable, smallholder tropical and temperate fruit production, and establish a vibrant smallholder fruit and horticulture sector in Ethiopia. In response, the project has established five and one nursery centers to provide technical support and planting materials on tropical and temperate fruits respectively.

2016 FY Report May – September 2016

Executive Summary

The Smallholder Horticulture Program (SHP) IV is a joint USAID-MASHAV-MoANR Ethiopia program mainly implemented in six woredas, namely Mecha, Basona Worena, Guto Gida, Meskan, Boloso Sore and Raya Alamata woredas in four main regions of Ethiopia- Amhara, Tigray Oromia and SNNPR. The program was designed to be implemented berween May 2016 and Septemebr 2019. The project's goal is to promote economic growth in rural areas through strengthening commercialization of small farmers in horticulture production in areas with recognized market potential. The 4th phase of SHP’s purpose is to develop a competitive and sustainable fruit development sector focusing on establishing a base for avocado export for Ethiopian farmers.
